Order up – One baby girl to go!
It's not very often in life that you know exactly what is going to happen and when, especially when it is something major like the birth of a child. March 28th was one of those days for Jennifer and me. We had an appointment with Thunderbird Hospital to induce labor for Jennifer. It was very exciting for both of us. We had been told to be at the hospital at 6:00am and that by that night we would be parents. Most people have to wait for Mother Nature to let them know that it is time to go to the hospital, either by their water breaking or by contractions and it is never usually a convenient time. We were able to just setup a time and go, hahaha. We were able to do this because Jennifer's blood pressure was so high that it was freaking out her doctor, and her and me as well. We were in the 37th week so the baby was considered to be far enough along to where it wouldn't make any difference if she was out a couple weeks early.
The morning of the 28th, Tuesday, rolls around and Jennifer and I are up and ready by a little after 5:00am. We were told to call ahead to make sure that they were ready for us. Of course they told us all the beds were full and not to come down, but that they would call us back when they were ready for us. We should have asked for an ETA, but didn't. So 9:30am rolls around and they still haven't called. They had told us to eat something before we got there because after that Jen wouldn't be able to eat anything. Jen had eaten breakfast at 4:30 but by 9:30 she was getting hungry again so we had second breakfast because we figured they would be calling any minute, we were wrong. They ended up calling us at around 12:30. We headed out the door and made our way to the hospital.
We got to the hospital and filled out all the paper work and Jen was induced by 3:30pm-ish. Everything went surprisingly quickly. At least it seemed that way. At a little after 5:00pm Jen's doctor came in and broke her water, but then said that she couldn't stay as her shift had ended. But all was not lost, because the on-call doctor would be there for the delivery. Then all of the sudden it was 10:00pm and Jen was ready for the epidural. She held out for a long time even though they told her she could pretty much have it whenever she wanted. She did great. At about 1:00am, yes we are now into Wednesday the 29th, things were really moving. The contractions were telling us that we were getting close, but at about 2:30am the doctor was called away to another hospital and they told Jen to just stop pushing and the doctor would be back in a half an hour! OMG! Just “pause” the birth of your baby?!? The nurse apologized and said that this happens sometimes. Luckily because of the epidural Jen was able to manage the contractions and was able to hold off until the doctor returned. Oh, I forgot when we first got there, there was a lady a few rooms down from us having a natural birth and we could hear every contraction she was having. It was horrible; I can't understand why in this day and age anyone would pass up the wonderful drugs that are offered to help remove the pain of this “magical” process. The doctor finally returns at a little after 3:00am and says that we can now continue the process. Then has the audacity to talk on her cell phone for the next 20 minutes with someone else in another hospital while the nurses are actually the ones helping Jen! Why couldn't they just do it this whole time when the stupid doctor wasn't there? Oh well, the nurses were actually very helpful and great at their job and at 4:03am on March 29th, 2006 Caitlin Lauren Childress was born. She weighed 6lbs 14oz and was 20in long.
Jen and I stayed at the hospital until Thursday night. They were a little concerned about Jen's blood pressure as it wasn't coming down as much as they would have liked. We returned home and are now getting into a routine. Baby cries, we get up and check her. It goes on like this all night.
Jen and I couldn’t be happier. Caitlin is so wonderful. She has a smile that just melts our hearts. We are looking forward to raising her and can’t wait to see her do all of her “first” things.
We have a lot of pictures, you may have to wait a while for them to load but they are worth it.
